During the semi-annual modules a trainee is exposed to colleagues from more than 80 different nationalities at the Maersk Shipping Academy. Hence, the modules become a forum for networking across countries, cultures, religions and beliefs. The networks created at the modules are often life-lasting networks that have both a professional and a social character.
At the modules our trainees share a 2-bedroom apartment with a trainee from a different country and culture. In praxis this yields that during the 2 years each trainee will have spent 4 times 2 weeks living with people from 4 different cultures. This adds on to the cultural understanding and the networking that we expect from a M.I.S.E. graduate at the end of the Programme.
It is paramount to understand and respect the differences between cultures because networks are instrumental in making a career in the A.P. Moller - Maersk Group. The teambuilding exercises and classes in cross culture are custom-made to enhance networking but all other aspects of the M.I.S.E. modules serve as catalysts for networking as well.
When meeting many different people from different nationalities a natural reaction is distancing yourself from the others due to language barriers. In order to ensure that everybody networks across language barriers one of the few rules in the M.I.S.E. Programme is that all participants speak English all the time when attending the modules. For trainees who are not native English speakers the modules are also an opportunity to improve one’s spoken English. The rule also applies when communicating with people of the same nationality.
