We believe that learning is a continuous process that lasts a life-time. This is one of the central values in our organisation which is inherent in the M.I.S.E. Programme. We continuously improve our teaching methods and capabilities to benefit our organisation.

The way we teach at the Maersk Shipping Academy can be a sudden awakening for some trainees. A quick transition to the learning values and principles of the M.I.S.E. Programme is, however, imperative for the success within the A.P. Moller - Maersk Group.
Unlike other institutions we do not teach at the lowest common denominator but rather at the highest. The purpose of the tuition is not to repeat the written course material but to elaborate on the knowledge our trainees have already obtained. Hence, self-discipline and proper preparation is a prerequisite for all of our trainees. Trainees who decide not to participate actively in the tuition will soon find themselves behind the rest of the trainees. Due to the compressed curriculum and the intensive tuition, catching up once behind is difficult and could adversely affect one's future career.
We recognize and use the different teaching principles and tailor the tuition thereafter. Our classroom teaching is often case-based to increase the level of participation and prevent the tuition from becoming monotonous. Virtual class-rooms are used whenever physical group-work is not possible and especially in connection with inductive learning processes.
We believe case studies are excellent learning tools because there is no single, correct solution to complex business problems and the conflicting opinions that emerge promote enquiry, discovery and tolerance for other points of view.
Some topics are meant to be taught in classrooms, some are better taught over the Internet but there are topics that cannot be learned neither over the Internet nor in classrooms - this is one of the reasons that we have introduced the outdoor classroom.
In the M.I.S.E. Programme we in particular take advantage of the outdoor classroom in order to simulate challenges from the office environment. Often the classes will last one full day or more and our trainees will be exposed to the elements. These days have become an excellent opportunity for the participants to challenge their own personal boundaries as well as experiencing how they cope with physical and psychological stress.
Exploring your own boundaries and limits are important for the process of becoming an international leader and so is teamwork. In the outdoor classroom our trainees learn to co-operate and discover own strengths and weaknesses. Process consultants and trained psychologists are following the processes in the different groups and provide personal feedback to the group and each individual trainee. Feedback that can later on be applied to one's personal development and daily job.
